Alive With PrideTM (AWP), the first-ever large scale entertainment, shopping and educational event in the Midwest for the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender (GLBT) community, will be held over Labor Day Weekend 2001 (Friday, August 31-Sunday, September 2) at Chicago's Navy Pier.

Sponsored by the Chicago Area Gay & Lesbian Chamber of Commerce, AWP is expected to attract more than 20,000 local, regional, national and international attendees. Scheduled events include a marketplace featuring business/retail shopping; an eclectic lineup of seminars, workshops and presentations; entertainment featuring national celebrities; local sightseeing tours; an exhibit of the Names Project AIDS Memorial Quilt; and a bevy of social events.

"AWP will be the only event of its kind in the Midwest," says Joseph Sprague, executive director of the Chamber. "In addition to a weekend full of entertainment and fun we are expecting more than 300 merchants, companies and organizations to be selling or marketing their merchandise, products and services."

Among the entertainers scheduled to perform will be Lady Bunny, creator and producer of Wigstock, New York's world-renowned drag festival who will host Wigstock Chicago-a Midwest first; a comedy festival and other events including film previews, social mixers and live on-going entertainment.

Seminars and workshops scheduled during AWP will address such issues as GLBT history, health, travel/tourism, pride and general well being.
