Heating Terminology

AFUE

Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency, rates the efficiency of a gas burning appliance such as a furnace.  The lowest AFUE rating available is 80% and the highest is 95%.

Single Stage Furnace

means the flame comes on one size, the blower motor comes on one speed it heats the space and shuts off.

2 Stage Furnace

means the flame can be on low fire or high fire, the blower can run on a lower or higher speed depending on what the flame is doing. This furnace is intended to more evenly heat your home, be quieter and reduce temperature swings by running on its low stage flame and low speed fan most of the time.

80% AFUE Furnaces

This furnace is a standard efficiency furnace that will vent to the original flue riser using galvanized pipe like the original furnace did.

90% Plus AFUE Furnaces

This is considered a high efficiency furnace it no longer vents like a standard one does.  It will vent with PVC piping, in most cases to the side or back of your home. It delivers the added efficiency.

Variable Speed Motor

is a quieter more efficient DC volt motor commonly available in 2 stage furnaces.
